4 Reasons to Rent a Storage Unit

Over half of those who use affordable mini storage live in suburban areas. Owning your own home is no guarantee that you’ll have enough room for all your belongings. Self storage as an industry has boomed in recent years as more Americans find themselves with more things than they have room to store them. When that happens, the most sensible thing to do may be to rent a storage unit.

How is a rented storage unit better than piling up items in a basement or a friend’s garage? Great question!

  1. Storage units are designed specifically for protecting your items during long-term storage. While preparing to rent a storage unit, look for amenities like video monitoring, concrete floors, and insulated storage areas. Utilize pallets to keep furniture and other belongings off the ground. Clean items thoroughly and label them accurately.
  2. Even in Texas, seasons change. Mini storage facilities do their best to compensate for changes in temperature and (especially) humidity. But you’ll need to do your part too. If you’re sealing items in zip-top bags, consider that this may cause mildew from lack of ventilation. Always avoid storing any kind of perishable food items in long-term storage.
  3. Protect equipment. If you’re storing items like lawnmowers, chainsaws, or any other item that contains fuel, be sure to drain the fuel before storage. When storing vehicles, though, the opposite is true. Cars, RVs, and some boats should have their gas tanks topped off before storage.
  4. Keep it neat! Self storage lets you clear out the clutter. Just like when moving, put everything you can into boxes and use packing tape to seal them. This keeps out dust, dirt, and insects. Boxes are easy to label and store, especially when you take care not to make them too heavy. Line the bottom of several boxes with heavy items like books, then put lighter items on top.
